Relationships and Sex Education

  • Exercises ten and eleven are yet to be filmed, but follow the same principles in their delivery.

Exercise Seven

Exercise Seven, "Relationships – explore the rules" : Working in small groups, students first sort out cards into physical and social ‘moves’, then arrange them in two parallel time lines. What rules do people use as they build up relationships and why are some ‘players’ ‘good’ and others ‘bad’?

Exercise Eight

Exercise Eight, "Relationships – playing the game" : The two sets of cards are used to play a game which models the build-up of a relationship between a fictional couple. Both have decided what their physical and social stopping points are, but only by interpretting the other person’s moves and playing the cards skilfully can they keep in control.

Exercise Nine

Exercise Nine, "Pregnancy – Risks and choices" : The class works in seven groups and read back short scenes describing the lead-up to and the long-term consequences of two young people have unprotected sex on a one-night-stand. With more personal understanding and support from friends both young people might have made different choices and avoided a very risky situation.

Exercise Twelve

Exercise Twelve, "Contraception – Soft skills" : By reading aloud short scene from a story this exercises focuses on some of the social influences, and social skills that determine whether a condom is used. Clearly knowing ‘the mechanics’ is only part of the story.
